Reflection on Group Wiki Experience

When working in a group, it helps me to gain more knowledge by learning from one another. We share our ideas and opinions and questions it. I also learnt that co-operation within members is the most important factor because all of us must contribute our ideas in order to accomplish a successful group work/assignment.

As an individual contributor, I learnt to be responsible as the researches are equally distributed among one another in the group therefore we must contribute and submit our share of work promptly by the proposed dateline. Everything went smooth and we have done our group work and I felt that we did a good job. :D

The most challenging experience I had faced during this Group Wiki was that it was hard to delegate the work to different parts as I was afraid I was not being fair. But we managed to split the work evenly and got things done. In addition, we were afraid we were overdoing our parts. And was later convinced by our teacher that it was better overdone than not.

The advice I would give to the next batch wiki groups is simply to enjoy their group work and split the work equally among the members! I think that group work helps to interact with friends and also learn new things from each other. Most importantly, enjoy working together with the group members.

I would use Wiki to research for my Diploma because Wiki allows other people to share their experience and also their point of view towards certain suggestions. Thus, it would be useful for my future assignments and projects in my diploma.

Twitter Reflections

Hello! Today we are on the topic of TWITTER! Does everyone has a twitter account? Hahaha. I do for sure!

For those who don't know twitter, twitter is a website that allows users to post a short message on their profile page and share among their followers. It is kind of update of your daily life and happenings. The users could also update their twitter via mobile phone. This bring conveniences and it brings social networking for people closer.

Having a twitter account has helped me in EIR in several ways and is different with blogging. Firstly, it allows me to interact with one another by posing intriguing topics and wait for my friend's opinions and answers. Twitter can actually serve as a live forum page, except that only your followers can respond to it. This has helped me on my EIR research topic, where I have gained responses from my friends on the topic.

Secondly, twitter enables us to grasps more attention than blogging. The reason being is that as compared to blogging, an entry post would usually be very wordy and it easily loses the viewers attraction to continue reading. Whereas twitter only restricts a 140 characters a twit and hence prompting me to refine my thoughts to fit the limit, attracting viewers and response.

Lastly, it would be the accessibility that twitter has a greater advantage to blogging. Twitter can be access by mobile phone as mentioned earlier while to access a blog it requires web-space with FTP access. With the advanced of technology, everyone can easily have access to twitter and is able to get updates.

However, I would prefer blogs to twitter as it allows me to express myself better and feature videos, audios and pictures enhancing my post much more interesting than twitter. Moreover, blogs can give us more information and perspective of certain topics that could be useful for my research topics. Occasionally, twitter can get spams by your friends and hence making it a flaw to look out for updates.

Twitter can help me with my research purposes by following users such as @cnalatest and @stcom, it allows me to keep track with news with my busy lifestyles and if any news that is related to my research topic I would spot it immediately or maybe came across it before, I could always traced it back. One way is to follow users that is of relevance to your research topic, my case would be @FansofChangi, it allows me to get the latest updates of Changi Airport and it has helped me in one of my project.

As mentioned before in my other earlier entries, blogs serves as a good platform to provide information and opinions of different individuals. However, these sites are sometimes bias but helpful to get different opinions for your research topic. There are also some blogs which are written by professional, thus there will be table graph and reference evidence that provides me with more useful ideas and information.

My Dream Holiday!

Hey all! What's up! Hahaha. Today's blog post is on "My Dream Holiday".

My dream holiday location would be Hawaii. The reason for my choice is that there isn't another place in the world which is as exotic and as beautiful as the Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaiian islands have the world's most active volcano. And the world's tallest sea mountain is also found in Hawaii. I would like to see these wonders of nature. Other than the natural beauty a lot of activities are also a major attraction for me. I would love to see, or may be even learn the hula. Hahaha. Below are pictures of Hawaii beautiful sceneries

I do not think one can find a place as beautiful, as refreshing and as exotic as the six beautiful Hawaiian Islands namely,: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii's Big island.

I've gotten all this information from Hawaii's Official Tourism Site www.gohawaii.com/. I've used 'purpose', 'coverage' and 'authority' as the evaluation criteria evaluate the website.

First off, the 'purpose' of the website was very clear as it is there to promote Hawaii as it was clearly stated on the website. "Hawaii's Official Tourism Site -- Travel Info for Your Hawaii Vacation" The reason I chose 'purpose' was because it tells us straight away whether this website is what you are looking for immediately.

Next, the 'coverage' of the website is very comprehensive because it gives a user a wide range of useful links and tools and one good example would be the tabs they have covers all the six beautiful islands of Hawaii. The reason I chose 'coverage' was because it is important to have a website that covers almost everything and provide useful links for you to pursue a further search.

Lastly, the 'authority' of the website is shown as it is stated in the Corporate Information that they are working closely with the Hawaii Tourism Authority which gives the website the authority to publish and help tourist in their holiday trip plans. The reason I chose 'authority' was because it is important to know if the website is authorized to published the guidebook and such to the public as well as to check on its reliability of the website.

And here are the pictures taken from Second Life's Hawaii!

The Hawaii in Second Life isn't as beautiful than the picture of the real Hawaii that I've come across. Maybe soon Hawaii Tourism Board might see the potential of developing a replica of 'Hawaii' in Second Life to promote tourism! :D

Seventh Lesson

HI ALL! HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011! This is my first post for 2011! :D Today we learnt about Citizen Journalism!

Citizen Journalism is an article or journal usually written by the citizen or people based in their own country and it allows them to post it on the website together with photos and videos dealing with their own areas of studies, news and even their stories. In addition, it allows people to voice out their opinions and debate to share their views of the respective post.

The criteria that I've used to evaluate Stomp.com.sg is 'purpose' and 'accuracy'. Reasons for choosing 'purpose' as one of the criteria is because it is significant to know the aims, objectives or limitations, scope and intended audience of the site. This will help us better understand the website as well as to identify who are the people posting these information so that we can evaluate the websites on its reliability. And since Stomp is a website for the public which anyone from all walks of life in Singapore can post it thus it may or not be reliable.

The next criteria I've chosen is 'accuracy' as it assess the factual accuracy, research basis or cited references, and whether the contents are with political, ideological, or biasness. This helps us to see whether the post is of a certain credibility or not. Stomp is under the Singapore Press Holdings Ltd. Co. and its working closely with The Straits Times thus the contents submitted would probably be vet by their editor and edited if necessary.

To sum up, I've learnt how to evaluate the quality of different Internet information resources by the 10 areas of evaluation criteria.

Just to share a post that I found amusing when I came across while visiting Stomp. :D

If i were to create my own version of “Stomp” in relation my topic "Discussion on leisure trends among youths". I would change the layout of the website and categorize the different age group that youths falls under instead. In addition, this website will only be dedicated to youths of age between 12 to 21 to access. To be a member users have to sign up and input their IC no. to verify their age and hence able to post their favourite leisure past times. It will also be vet through by editors and edit if appropriate. In addition there would be a moderator to moderate comments to control cyber abuse of words in the website. There will also be a poll where the current most favourite leisure trend activities will be highlighted at the home page of the website. I believe with this new difference it will provide the youths with authentic learning and help them engage with communities of users safely (cyber bully).

Sixth Lesson

Hello there! Today's lesson was on invisible web (databases)! And I will be reflecting on the effectiveness on invisible web vs search engines, meta-search or subject directories.

Invisible web are databases that cannot be access by using the general web search engines as well as subject directories. And they cannot be found anywhere otherwise and it provides full text pages, files or other high-quality resources. This gives us user a another option to get our research materials since such databases are highly maintained thus these databases are updated and reliable information.

However, I will still utilize search engines, meta-search or subject directories as as mentioned what are provided in the World Wide Web and Invisible web gives us different information. An effective research requires one to search on not only one search facility but various other options as well. I would still obtain my normal research materials on Google (search engine) or other search facilities as it allows me fast access. To further my research I would seek for specialized information using no other than the Invisible web to search for specific databases (databases EBSCOhost) that pertains to my research topic.

I would definitely utilize the invisible web for my research in my own respective Diploma. In fact, I've already started using it for my previous projects as it requires us to search for real-time news coverage, statistics, airline and aircraft information and it cannot be found using other search facilities except using TP's Research Database which has acquired the invisible web ATI-Air Transport Intelligence.

I felt that it was really helpful as it has all the information i need to complete my project. And i will definitely continue to use the invisible web if the opportunity comes for my future projects or assignments.

For the wiki experience, I have learnt that everyone has their own viewpoints towards their various topics and even some that I've not known or thought of and this gave me an opportunity to grasp these knowledge they have shared. After a week, I also realize that more people have updated the wiki page and I was glad to see new stuffs added to it making it more refined for future students to study them. This wiki really gives all of us an opportunity to learn from one another.

SITE FEEDS AND WIKI COLLABORATIVE WORK

I'm back again! It time to update my blog once again!

Site Feed

Do you noticed something different from my blog? Look at the right! I've added site feeds in my blog! They are my two EIR friends, Jun Siang and Jingyi! :D
As all of you might have known, I'm blogging for the first time and naturally I have difficulties with blogging related stuffs. I'm a newbie, but I'm learning fast! Well but of course with a help from my dear friend, Jingyi! Hahaha. She made it look so simple when she taught me!

I feel that by having input site feed in my blog it provides me convenience as I can update myself of my friends blog easily. It also gives readers of my blog a gateway to websites or blogs that I follow.

Wiki Collaborative Work

I feel that Wiki is a place where people sought for knowledge as well as to share their knowledge or findings. This helps me to understand and learn new things about the topic better and am able to exchange references as everyone will bound to have different resources. The best part of Wiki is to be able to input our findings and share with everyone making the topic more refined and constantly changing. The wiki hence will benefit everyone who are researching on the topic. I find it very interesting reading the wiki as it was different from my perspective. Overall, I find Wiki collaborative work very enriching.

FOURTH LESSON!

Helloooooo! It’s the time of the week again! It’s time . . . for me to update! :D

Today’s lesson was enriching for me! Why do I say so? Because we were introduced to 2 new search facilities! These two search facilities are; Meta search engine and Subject Directory. There were many examples to select from each search facilities and we were task to only select one and compare between the two selected. And it’s time for Round 2 from the previous Round 1 (Google vs. Google Scholar)! This time it’s Metacrawler vs. Yahoo Directory.

I will start off by sharing the 2 new search facilities' features and drawbacks:

Metacrawler

Metacrawler allows users to conduct a single search and receives a number or results from different search engines. In a simpler way of describing it would be 'search the search engines'. This saves time for searching on different search engines. The results shown for my search was only 3 pages long, picking the most relevant materials from each search engines.

With Metacrawler it searches from 4 different search engines or at least for my search "recreation trends among youth"

Drawbacks:

Using the Metacrawler search, users will not be able to use the strategy search used in Google or other individual search engines. In addition, the Metacrawler search bar has a character limit of 53 characters (I counted).

Yahoo Directory

Yahoo Directory allows user to search on their compiled directory. These directory is compiled by a team of human who makes the decision to classify each materials into categories.

Not only can you do search on the directory itself you can basically browsed the the different category it has.

For Yahoo Directory it currently has 16 different categories to browse from.

After clicking the chosen topic out of the 16, they are furthered categorised into more specific topics.

With the directory organised in such a way, it makes browsing more effective for the user.

Drawbacks:

Since it is human compiled directory, the available results are limited. The search that you might want to search on might not have a category. The user must classify their search into these categories and might not know which it falls under. The searches are also limited to only web and cannot search on images, videos etc.

In conclusion, the prevailing search facility for me is . . . (drum rolls) Metacrawler! The reason being was that it has the relevant searches that I wanted and it only has 3 pages for me to look through (less time consuming). I could do many different searches changing the key words and I had better results. I did not prefer Yahoo Directory because I didn't knew which category did my topic falls under and had a hard time figuring that out and the results were very limited and most of the time it led me to a non-relevant results to what I am searching for.
